The Starting Point

Tired, cluttered, and not making the most of the room

The room had good bones but was working against itself. A run of old mirrored sliding wardrobes lined one wall and made the space feel closed in, the walls were a flat, cold off-white, and the carpet had seen better days. Add a bare pendant bulb and a plain panelled door and the whole room felt more like a dumping ground than somewhere to switch off at the end of the day. The homeowner wanted it to feel like a proper bedroom again. The brief was to make better use of the space, get some warmth and character into it, and give the room a full freshen up from top to bottom so it finally felt finished and somewhere they could actually enjoy.

What We Did

Stripped back to a clean slate, then built up properly

First job was to clear the room right out. The old mirrored wardrobes came off the wall and the tired carpet was lifted, which instantly gave us a proper canvas to work with and showed how much space there was to play with once the bulky sliders were gone. With the room back to bare walls, we set out the new fitted wardrobes to make far better use of the footprint. We went with clean, colour-matched doors that sit flush along the wall, so they hold plenty of storage without crowding the floor the way the old sliding units did. Building them in also let us line everything up neatly with the existing recess rather than leaving awkward gaps. Walls and woodwork were then prepped, filled and sanded ready for paint. Doing the wardrobes and the prep before any colour went on meant we could cut in cleanly around the new joinery and get a sharp, consistent finish rather than working around fixtures after the fact.

Once the room was prepped, we brought it to life with a soft sage green throughout, warm and easy to live with, lifted by crisp white on the skirting, trims and ceiling. The old panelled door was swapped for a solid oak one, which ties straight into the warmer tones and adds a bit of quality the moment you walk in. Lighting made a big difference too. Out went the single pendant, replaced with neat flush ceiling fittings and recessed downlights, plus a wall sconce by the bed, so the room can be soft and layered rather than lit by one harsh bulb. New carpet went down last to keep it clean, and the finishing details were all tidied up. The result is a completely different room. Cosy, calm and elegant, with proper storage and a finish that makes it somewhere the homeowner genuinely wants to spend time.
